On the day: Graduate Reception

As part of your graduation package, you and your guests are invited to attend the Graduate Reception after your ceremony. The Graduate Reception is held in the Brennan and McLarty Rooms in the Shortland Building. At the Reception you will be served a delicious selection of finger foods and canapés, enjoy live music and be welcomed as Alumni of The University of Newcastle.  If you or your guests have any specific dietary requirements, please make note of this when you book your Academic Dress and register for your Graduate Reception guest tickets.

Finding both Academic Dress and the Graduate Reception will be simple – you simply need to follow the black and white signs and flags down the hill from the Great Hall.

During the reception, a range of services will be available to you:

University of Newcastle Memorabilia

A full range of University of Newcastle memorabilia will be available for purchase during the Reception. The range of products includes clothing (jackets, ties, t-shirts, hats and scarves), glassware and metalware, desk accessories (including compendiums, pens, penholders and paperweights) and the ever popular soft toys including Grad Bears, Louie the University of Newcastle mascot and Koala Grad Bears.

A professional photography studio will provide photographic services during your ceremony and for your use at the Reception. At the Reception you may elect to have studio portraits taken of you in full academic regalia, with your classmates, your friends and your family. Please note that your graduation package includes one photograph and as you graduate, you will have this photograph taken on the Great Hall stage as you receive your testamur and shake hands with the Chancellor. Please be aware that as this is not a posed photograph sometimes it may not be one you would wish to keep - you may blink, or find the angle unflattering. For this reason many graduates choose to utilise the studio photography available on the day of their ceremony, to have portraits taken to ensure they have a professional record of their graduation day.

Testamur Framing and Plaques

Many graduates elect to have their testamur either framed or mounted on a plaque and both of these options will also be available to you after your ceremony in the Brennan and McLarty Rooms.
