The Cultural Awakenings Festival has been held at the University of Newcastle since 1994 and celebrates the cultural diversity of our students.
We open the festival on Monday, 7 September 2009, with a Welcome to Country by local Awabakal people, a performance by an indigenous dance troupe and then the Parade of Nations (where you can show us your stunning national dress).
Each day during the week there will be lunchtime performances by students (and professional performers) including traditional dances and songs from many nations. Wednesday night (party night at the Bar on the Hill) will be a great night.
The International Food Fair (the biggest event of the week) allows you to provide samples of your traditional food and is visited by over a thousand students and staff of the University as well as students from neighbouring schools.
You make our festival a success
-
let us know what events you would like to see during the festival.
Some ideas include country of origin film nights, traditional story telling and cooking classes.
-
get a group of your friends together and represent your country with a display or performance during the week or let us taste your national dishes on Food Fair Friday.
We give you funding to help you
