WELCOME TO UoN SAFEZONE!
With SafeZone on your SmartPhone, you are connected to UoN Security 24/7. You do not need to remember contact numbers for security if you have SafeZone downloaded.
SafeZone is a FREE location-base app for smart mobile devices making it easier to contact UoN Security if help is needed whilst on campus at Callaghan. It also enables UoN Security to respond if direct assistance is required.
Students and staff are encouraged to download the SafeZone app and register. It is FREE for all students and staff.
Always ensure you have location services enabled on your phone and turn on wi-fi to ensure you get the best connection on campus.
If you are outside the Callaghan SafeZone, your phone will provide you with a connection to triple zero "000" for emergency services.
The SafeZone app lets UoN students and staff, obtain assistance from UoN Security with a simple tap and hold on your SmartPhone (once the app is opened).
Three types of assistance are currently available:
When any of the icons are used, e.g. Alarm, Help or First Aid calls, your phone location will be shown on a map display for UoN Security to see where you are. If you are in a building, we will still get a location, but it may not be precise, so you still need to keep an eye out for the Security Officers responding.
If you raise an alarm, you must talk to a Security Officer and even if you have accidentally raised an alarm. It is important that we know you are safe.
Could be activated by students or staff who find themselves in a situation where their personal safety is threatened or they are hurt or injured. Or if students or staff see other people in trouble/hurt or injured needing assistance.
When the Duress Alarm app is activated, an alarm will display your phone location on devices used by UoN Security. Officers will then be able to determine how to respond to your location and situation. The Officers will attempt to call you, to talk about what is happening. You should try to talk to the Officers and explain what help you need and if practical, confirm your location.
A Security Officer will endeavour to attend your location and talk to you. You may still need to identify yourself to UoN Security Officers when they arrive, especially if there are a lot of people around.
When should I use the Duress Alarm?
- If you feel threatened.
- If someone is threatening or has just threatened you.
- If you have been assaulted or are the victim of a robbery.
- If you are hurt or injured.
- If you see another person in any of the above situations who needs help.
Note: If you activate your phone outside the Callaghan SafeZone (refer to maps below) your phone will tell you that you are outside the zone and offer you a single-click button to dial triple zero "000" for emergency services (Police, Fire or Ambulance).
A Help Call will connect you to UoN Security, and you can talk directly to a UoN Security Officer. Your location will be displayed on a map for UoN Security while you are making the call.
When should I use Help Call?
- If you want a safety escort after dark.
- Other scenarios (any scenario where you would use a security phone if one was available).
- If you feel uncomfortable making a duress alarm.
A First Aid Call will connect you to UoN Security - all Security team members are qualified First Aiders.
Your location will be displayed on a map for UoN Security while you are making the call. Officers will then be able to determine how to respond to your location and situation. The Officers will talk to you about what is happening. You should try to explain what help you need and, if practical, confirm your location. A Security Officer will then endeavour to attend your locations and render assistance.
You may still need to identify yourself to UoN Security Officer when they arrive.
If you register with the SafeZone app, UoN Security may send push-text messages about important campus watch safety issues or other emergencies.
The Callaghan campus SafeZone coverage is shown in the map below:
If you are outside the Callaghan SafeZone, when you activate an alert, your phone will provide you with a connection to triple zero "000" for emergency services.
This app is intended to raise an alert to UoN Security for response to a personal safety issue or the personal safety issue of another. It is expected that users will use this app when their safety is threatened, they need First Aid, they need assistance from UoN Security or they are seeking assistance for another person.
Misuse of the alert system would undermine the operational intent of the app. Where UoN Security identify a user who is misusing the app and/or creating false alarms, UoN Security will provide a formal warning to the user, directly and through CriticalArc (the provider). If the user repeats the misuse, UoN Security may formally write to CriticalArc to block user access for the user who identified as misusing the app. UoN Security will not accept any responsibility or liability for a user who has access blocked in using the app in any UoN SafeZone.
