1.  Do I need to bring any furniture?

All of our Colleges are fully furnished except for bed linen, which can be purchased on arrival if necessary.  All rooms include a bed, desk, chair, study lamp, wardrobe and storage for books and personal items.   Students are able to bring a bar fridge (not a full size one) for their rooms if they wish.

2.  What will I need to bring with me to College?

We recommend that you bring the following items with you to College:

  • Licence/photo ID
  • Bed linen (sheets, pillow, blanket, etc)
  • Computer/Laptop
  • Fan
  • Clothes Hangers
  • Towels
  • Mosquito Repellent/Sunscreen
  • Study Stationery
  • Clothing/Personal Items

3.  How do I check in/check out?

If you are a Callaghan resident, you will need to come directly to the Accommodation Services office located at Edwards Hall to collect your room keys. You can also collect your parking permit on this day. Residential Assistants (student staff members) will be able to show you where your room is and introduce you to college life.

For Ourimhah residents, you need to contact the Blue Gum House Accommodation Coordinator (Phone: 02 4348 4422 or Extension: 84422) to pre-arrange a time to pick up your room keys from Student Support in Ourimah.

5.  Where does my mail go?

All mail is delivered to the Accommodation Services Office where it is sorted by College. You will find your mail in a pigeon hole under the first letter of your last name.

Pigeon holes are located in the following places:

  • Edwards Hall: Beside the Accommodation Services Office
  • Evatt House: D Block Underground
  • International House: Study Room
  • Barahineban: Mailboxes located outside the main entrance
  • Blue Gum House:  Distributed Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Otherwise can be collected in person at reception in Student Support.

Large parcel or letters of importance that are sent to you will be kept at the office for your collection. We will send an email to your student email account to notify you of this. You must bring photo identification with you when collecting your parcel or it will not be given to you. If are unable to collect your parcel yourself you must send email confirmation of the person nominated to collect it for you.

6.  How do I get a parking permit?

If you own a vehicle and wish to park at the residences, you must apply for a University of Newcastle Residential Parking Permit. This permit will allow you to park in the designated "Residential" car parks at the accommodation sites only. Please note that this is different from a “Student” parking permit.

To apply for a Residential Parking Permit, you must contact the Accommodation Services office. You will need to provide your current vehicle registration papers. Once issued with a Residential Parking Permit, you must display your permit on your vehicle whenever you park in a designated residential car park.

Currently the cost of a parking permit is $148.40/year (subject to change).

7.  Do I have internet and telephone in my bed/study room?

All bed/study rooms have wired broadband internet access and wireless access is available in all common rooms.  To connect your computer/laptop visit the IT Services website for instructions.  All residents have a phone in their room for internal and external calls. To make external calls you must place credit onto your Telephone Account and internal calls are free.

8.  Is there a laundry?

All Halls have laundry facilities with washing machines and dryers.  Students need to provide their own detergent and baskets.

9.  How do I know what's going on at College?

There are many methods of communication used within the Colleges. Each College has their own Facebook group or page, and ResLife have a 'University of Newcastle Colleges' Facebook group.  You should also visit this website regularly for event updates and important information and don't forget to attend your fortnightly College meetings with your RA.

10.  What if I get locked out of my room?

You must keep your room key with you at all times.  If you lock yourself out of your room during office hours see the staff at the Accommodation Services office.  If it is after hours, you will need to contact your On-call RA.  If you continue to lock yourself out of your room, fines will begin to apply in incremental increases.

11.  Can I withdraw from residence at any time?

Each request to withdraw prior to the end of a signed License Agreement is looked at and assessed on its own merit.  In most instances once you have accepted the offer of Accommodation you are bound by the Terms and Conditions of the License Agreement.

12.   What do I do if I have no money on Direct Debit day or need to organise a Payment Plan?

If you need to apply for a payment plan or have any issues with paying your rent on time, you will need to pay a visit the friendly staff at the Accommodation Services Office which is located in Edwards Hall.

13.  I want to purchase merchandise or attend a user-pay event, how do I pay for this?

Throughout the year you will be given the opportunity to purchase College merchandise or attend events such as Winery Tours and Formal Functions. You will sign up for these via Survey Monkey or a signup sheet and the charges will be placed on your Accommodation Account for payment via the Accommodation Services Online Portal (subject to change in 2013).

14.  How do I lodge a maintenance request?

If you have any maintenance issues in your room or shared living areas then you will need to lodge a maintenance request online.  To lodge a request you need to go to the Accommodation Services Online Portal and enter your login ID and password. These requests are looked after by your friendly college caretaker or contractors as soon as possible.  For urgent maintenace requests, during office hours contact the Accommodation Services office (Callaghan: Extension 41000) or Facilities Management (Ourimbah: Extension 84291), or after-hours phone your On-call RA who will contact Security.
