Following student consultation, Toga Party 2014 will be a ticketed event.

Suggestions from you that we have implemented for Toga Party:

  • Tickets to the event will now be pre-sold, giving ticket holders guaranteed entry before 9pm. This will mean we will have a better handle on event numbers, and let you know if we think there will be a long wait after 9pm. Tickets will be:
    • $5 for U Members
    • $10 for UoN Students
    • $20 for Guests.
  • If you miss out on a ticket, we will add you to a wait list, and you will get first chance at any tickets that become available.
  • If you purchase a ticket and can no longer attend, we will offer you a refund, allowing us to re-allocate the ticket to someone on the wait list.
  • After 9pm, entry will be opened up (depending on how full the venue is), allowing people who missed out on tickets a chance to get in too.
  • Guest tickets will be limited to one guest per student and must be bought by a student. Each guest (non-UoN student) must be accompanied by a UoN student, and each student can only bring one guest. This will bring the focus of the parties back to where it should be – fun for UoN students.
  • Look out on the night for improved signage showing bus and train timetables, including the times the free buses to town start. This will make it easier for you to plan your journey home.
  • Keep an eye out for our expanded bar service with $4 spirits now being served from the cafe end of the bar as well as the usual main bar location. We are hoping this will make it quicker for you to get served and reduce the lines at the bar.

Stay tuned - an announcement on when and where you can buy your tickets to Toga Party is coming soon.

For more information on Toga Party visit the official event page.

Donations needed

Jessie Mabalhin, a first year UoN nursing student is appealing for donations for victims of the Typhoon, whom are sadly inclusive of his family as he originates from the Philippines. Below is a message from Jessie:

“My family, including my 85 yr. old grandma lives in Tacloban City which was the worst hit by the typhoon where estimated 10,000 people feared dead. The latest news I've heard as of this morning 13 November 2013 was that they are alive but they do not have no food, water, shelter just relying on relief goods. They have lost everything. I would like to knock in the hearts of the university community if I could leave some boxes in the campus for some donations such as used clothing, toiletries, medicine or anything they want to give. This donations will go a long way and would really help the people devastated by the typhoon.”

WHAT:  We are supporting Jessie 100% and are asking for donations of:

  • Clothing
  • Canned food
  • Toiletries

WHERE: UoN Services, The Basement, Level 1, Shortland Building

WHEN: Anytime between 8am and 5pm until Wednesday, 27 November.

Yak Media - expanding to cover both text and video

Since 2011, Yak magazine has been delivering flawless copy, informing all students about what is going on and what is important in the academic and social world. Yak is at the forefront of on-campus literature and whenever there is a band or politician at Callaghan campus, a hungry Yak is never far behind. In simple terms Yak is a magazine run for the students, by the students, and allows both a range of editors and contributors to have their work published.

Since 2012, UTV has been developing and improving, trying and testing different approaches and formats, like the Aussie cricket team mixing up their top order. Improvement has been constant and the recent release of interviews with Something for Kate and The Rubens, as well as a new regular What’s On segment have been their best work yet. The video channel is similar in structure to the magazine: run for the students, by the students, that allows presenters and media production students to gain useful insight into the industry.

I believe that it was the young girl on the Old El Paso ad who once questioned: Why not have both?

So that’s exactly what we plan to do.

Yak and UTV will now combine in glorious harmony under the heading of Yak Media.

This rollout will see the talents of our hard-working print guru’s combine with the rapidly developing media students of UTV to provide a more intense and thorough look at UoN life. This will allow for across media production and for ideas developed in the magazine to be given a visual element (or vice versa).

Follow all the latest updates from Yak media via their Facebook, or visit their homepage here. Yak magazine can be found in your nearest on-campus press-point, or online. A full list of Yak TV episodes can be found here.
