History & Mission
The organisation that was to become UoN Services Limited (the U) was formed in 1961 by a group of visionary staff and students, initially providing food for the Newcastle University College community from a caravan at Tighes Hill.
The U has grown to become the organisation that provides and manages a range of services and facilities on the Callaghan campus including bars, a range of food outlets as well as a functions centre. It also provides common meeting grounds and social centres for students and staff of the University and the broader University community.
UoNS is now a public company limited by guarantee, a controlled entity of the University of Newcastle, and is governed by a Board of Directors which includes student representatives, University appointees and independent directors with expertise from various business sectors.
UoN Services operates on four key values: Engagement, Support, Innovation and Sustainability.
